ELLEN PICCOLO
Ellen Piccolo
Born and raised in Brooklyn, I have been a painter for over 40 years. Many of my shows have been in the metropolitan New York area including recent exhibits at the Prince Street Gallery in Chelsea. Though I was trained as a representational painter, abstraction of representational genre is an element of some of my work
In addition to painting, for the last several years, my work has taken a new turn. Cotton fabric has become the new and exciting medium in my exploration of shape, color, depth and movement.

In 2016, I started taking classes regularly with Nancy Crow which has changed my focus and created a new way of expressing ideas through fabric.
“Making Music,” cotton fabric, pieced, 90” x 60”, 2020
Working with shapes and color allow me to show depth and movement in my quilts. When the mechanics of how to put things together (piecing) finally worked itself out, the flexibility of the medium was what I was looking for to create an interaction of shapes which dance or move throughout the work. Matisse and Keith Haring have been a big influence in the current work which shows expression and depth through figure/ground relationships.
